The City of Carlyle operates under the direction of a Mayor and Board of Aldermen. The city is divided into four wards with two aldermen serving from each ward.
Assisting with city planning and programs are the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, Library Board, Park Board, and the Economic Development Council. Members of these boards are appointed by the mayor, subject to council approval and serve in an advisory capacity only. Final decision making authority is vested with the City Council.
Regular City Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Clinton County
Carlyle is the county seat of Clinton County. Founded in 1824, Clinton County is made up of 15 townships. With a population of 1,100 at the time of its inception, Clinton County has grown to count approximately 36,000 among its current population.
